The role of technology in this process is complex. On the one hand, it provides the tools that can help to live purposefully meditation apps, on-line communities, the access to educational resources. Conversely, it may also lead to distracting and attention fragmentation. Especially social media can be a source of comparison and incessant stimulation, so it is hard to stay in the present moment. Contemporary spirituality does not demand any denial of technology but it does promote conscious use of technology. This could be putting limits, taking digital breaks or filtering the materials that you are exposed to.
The other area that intentional living has significant implications is relationships. The world we live in is busy and transactions can be transactional or superficial. Intentional living brings about closer engagement. It teaches us to listen empathetically, speak truthfully and be present with others. It is also about knowing when relationships are not congruent with your values and the ability to draw boundaries. It does not imply not to be conflictual and uncomfortable, but to be aware and approach them with integrity.
The topic of purpose is usually associated with spirituality, yet it is often misunderstood. A lot of individuals seek one, big purpose that will give meaning to their lives. Though this concept may be motivating, it may lead to pressure and frustration. A more subtle approach regards purpose as something that changes with time. It is not a definite destination but a direction- a mode of being in the world. Being intentional is living in such a way that what you do is something that you believe matters to you now, but you are also open to change.
Another important aspect of purposeful living is gratitude. It changes attention to the absence to the presence. This does not imply neglecting of challenges and difficulties, but it is to understand that in one of the hardest times in life, there are things that can be enjoyed. Gratitude brings about a feeling of abundance and it also affects your approach to life. Once you believe that you possess enough, you are no longer as afraid and more welcoming to giving and relating.
Integration of mind, body and emotions is also a modern approach to spirituality. Instead of seeing these aspects as being independent, it sees them as being interrelated. Physical health affects mental acuity; emotional health impacts decision making; thoughts determine behaviors. The intention of living means taking care of all these aspects. This may involve consistent exercise, a nutritious diet, expressing feelings, and having a rest of the mind. They are not merely a way of life, but a way of demonstrating self-respect and consciousness.
Notably, living intentionally does not mean being perfect. There will never be no distractions, impulsivity, or misfit. These moments are not intended to be eradicated; it is to be aware of them and come back to consciousness. This will take time and compassion towards oneself. Cruel self-criticism tends to strengthen the patterns that one is attempting to alter. A contemporary spiritual practice promotes compassion towards oneself, as growth is slow and non-linear.
And community is involved in this journey too. Although modern spirituality is an individualistic phenomenon, it is not in a vacuum. Giving support and perspective can be achieved by sharing experience, insights, and challenges with others. This does not involve a formal group, it could be as simple as having meaningful discussions with friends, or even being a part of a community that believes in authenticity and development. Living with purpose involves surrounding yourself with things that help you to be well and appreciate your values.
