Letting Go: The Spiritual Way to inner freedom(part four)

But the way of release is not straight. We have times of expansiveness and freedom and then times of reversion to old patterns. This is natural. Human complexity is not overshadowed by spiritual growth. All that matters is patience. Whenever we find ourselves clinging, we can find a chance to relax. Whenever we perceive opposition, we have the option of letting go a bit more.

Releasing is a matter of discernment as well. That does not imply acceptance of abuse and neglect of healthy boundaries. In some cases, letting go entails abandoning a destructive circumstance. It involves letting go of the hope that someone will change when it becomes clear that it is not the case. It is an acceptance of the fact that some of the dreams that we have are not going to be true to ourselves as we grow. Discernment also makes the process of letting go to be an act of wisdom and not avoidance.

This journey can be supported by the community. When we open up and discuss our struggles and knowledge with people who prioritize progress, we will not feel alone. The courage to loss, change, and surrender can be inspired through hearing how others have been through this. Simultaneously the most profound work of letting go is interior. It is a mute dialogue between us and life.

There is no other reality that teaches the need to let go than death. Nothing in this world is everlasting. Relationships change, seasons change, bodies change. The realization of impermanence may be initially frightening. But it also can enhance appreciation. When we know that nothing is permanent, we will appreciate the present moment. Releasing is not a heartbreaking loss, but a natural cycle.

In the end, releasing is a way of expressing love. It is self-love, since we are not willing to be trapped in suffering. It is love to other people, since we give them the liberty to be themselves. It is life love, as we believe in the way it will unfold. Knowing inner freedom does not mean not to have challenges. It is lack of undue opposition.

We can find ourselves, as we wander the spiritual path of letting go, that freedom was never to be purchased. It existed at all times under the stratifications of fear and attachment. When we relax gradually what we were tightening, we discover a large consciousness which is unchanging and calm. Here we can take an active part in the world without being absorbed by it.

Surrendering does not make life meaningless. Quite the contrary, it explains what is really important. Once we stop focusing on ego defense and our ability to influence all the outcomes, we can shift our focus on compassion, creativity and genuine connection. We enter life as participants and not as captives.

Ultimately, spiritual journey towards inner freedom is not about being beyond humanity, but rather with open hands. It is of encountering happiness without attachment and of encountering sadness without losing hope. It is a question of faith in the possibility of incorporating all experiences, both good and bad and letting go of it. And in that unbroken measure of grasping and letting go we find a silent, lasting tranquility–the tranquility of a heart that has learnt to loosen.

Pure light and infinite love be with us!
